About Us One- Garden, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to research and conservation of medicinal plants from temperate zones worldwide. One- Garden has established a collection of over 500 medicinal plants. With the help of Robert Newman, past curator of Nanjing Medicinal Botanical Garden in China, we now have a considerable number of Chinese medicinal plants in our collection. Just as in North America, plant medicine in China is under heavy pressure from wild harvest. We offer sanctuary in the hopes of preserving germplasm and ensuring longevity of plant-derived medicines. Likewise, approximately 400 acres land is preserved in native forests, grassland, and wetland, providing essential habitat for at-risk native species such as goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa), bloodroot (Sanguinarea canadensis) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius). Our research efforts focus on cultivation of these important and sometimes rare species in order to obtain the highest quality medicine using organic and Biodynamic® farming techniques. We study germination requirements, soil and light preferences, and crop yield. In addition, we utilize our ever-growing library to research folk medicinal usage and pharmacology. This information is compiled in our database helping us not only track the plants but offer to the public important cultivation information both on the commercial and private levels. Our first publication, the Catalogue of Cultivation, highlights the 89 important species available. Profits from the Catalogue of Cultivation are used to support the One-Garden library and to aid in expansion of demonstration beds and markers to facilitate growth into a hands-on educational as well as research facility. As a non-profit, the One- Garden provides a vehicle to support the development of unique medicinal plants and assist seed conservationists and educators in bringing some of these neglected species into areas where they can be appreciated for their medicinal properties and beauty. In addition, the project is working to protect the local ecosystem by identifying and researching medicinal properties of native Ozark flora.
