Celosia cristata, Common Cockscomb Stunning annual, 2-3 ft. tall with large, velvet scarlet heads blooming from July to September. Direct seed at shallow depth as soon as soil is warm, average to rich, well-drained soil, full sun. Germination in 7 days. Thin to 6-12", stake if soil is rich. Harvest flowers July to October. Sun dry. Both seeds and flowers are used in Chinese herbal medicine for blood diseases, bleeding, and urinary tract infections. Vital and energetic, it has a small reputation as an aphrodisiac.
